"Abe, I´m scared..." a young and faint cry sounded from behind the small wodden bed.
Peeking over his sheets Abe rubbed his eyes, yawning, still not looking at the small being standing before him.
"Larn!" he wined, sitting down on his bed and blinking repeatedely to perceive everything around him. "It´s so early, can´t you come when I´m actually awake?"
Larn pouted and looked up at him, his lips curving down and his eyes watering. "But...big brother..."
Abe rolled his eyes and lifted the sheets for a few seconds. "Oh shush! Mom will listen! I don´t want to wash the clothes again! Come come...big baby." Frowning he turned his back to Larn, crossing his arms.
Larn quickly hopped in the bed, his sad expression replaced by a happy glee as he chuckled softly. "Yay! It always works, big brother."
"Not a word." Abe frowned more looking into the wall, though his brother was right. Abe could never say no to little Larn. In a way, Larn´s smile was the perfect balance for his normally gloomy personality.
Larn nodded and shut his mouth for a few seconds that seemed like hours for both the boys. Laughter or sobbing were sounds essential in their little worlds.
"Abe?" Larn whispered softly, leaning his head to burry his face on his brother´s shoulder.
"Yes, Larn?" Abe murmured slowly, his voice barely being heard.
"Do you think daddy is ever coming back?"
Abraham closed his eyes at Larn´s question before taking a deep sigh, feeling as if his lungs would blow up from the fear inside him. Larn was too young to understand the concept of death. Heck, Abe himself was only seven, and it still made him confused thinking on how his father was never coming back. Larn shouldn´t have to deal with that.
"Daddy is already with us, Larn..." he looked down for a few seconds before holding his brother´s chin. "Daddy is in the rain, he touches us everyday, letting us know he´s ok and that we´ll meet him one day."
"Why isn´t he coming to us?" Larn raised and eyebrow, touching his brother´s cheeks.
"Because..." Abe looked at the ceiling again, trying to think on what to say. "Because he wants us to learn...when you are riding a bike and fall...if he always helps you ride it you won´t...learn how to do it on your own...if you...and I search for him alone...we´ll get there."
It was heavy saying this. It was hard to contain tears that didn´t come. But in a way he didn´t lie...he thought so.
"Smile, Abe..."
"What?" Abe raised an eyebrow, broken from his trance by Larn´s request. "What do you mean?"
"Smile, big brother...I can´t be happy if you´re...not happy. We´re friends forever, right?" he smiled and grabbing Abe´s lips forced them to form a smile.
Sighing for a bit Abe smiled and kissed his younger brother´s forehead.
"Always and always, Larn..."
